Christmas Shopping - Part 1

DSC05780_320x200

When my sister and I were growing up, Mum used to buy our Christmas presents in July - yes July. Due to the mid-year sales. She'd then put them away until Christmas Eve. (A bit too Colin Powell - n'est pas?) Anyway, now I know why we received beanies and ugg boots on Christmas morning, even though we were holidaying at the beach. In light of this, I refuse to start my Christmas shopping until October. Now that we're at the tail end of October, I thought I'd share a couple of the things I've bought the little ones for Christmas. Read about them below.

The Society Inc

I love finding shops that sell bits and pieces that no-one else does. I love one-of-a-kind. Maybe that's why I like fossicking through antique stores and markets so much. One store which feels like a market is The Society Inc in Paddington (Sydney). The store is owned by stylist Sibella Court, who also happens to live above the store. I was in Sydney recently and popped into her store. There were some many things I wanted to take home with me, but I didn't have any spare room in my hand luggage, for the coral or glassware that I coveted. Instead I settled for some canvas ribbon (see photo below) and some gift tags.

Going to the beach with kids is as glamorous as Don Burke in the garden. It's just not glam at all. The amount of stuff you need to lug to the beach - the tent, the stroller, the balls, frisbees, floaties, sunscreen, cool drinks and hats.

Let's Mini!

What do Steve McQueen, Twiggy and Kristen Stewart have in common? Goodlooking. Famous. Yes. But they all own (or owned) a Mini Cooper. This mini cooper (pictured) is from 1970 and is for sale at the Classic Throttle Shop for around $50k. I must admit that I love Minis!

Door Handles & the Jia Shanghai

Door handles are something I always notice. They make a real impression. When entering a shop, house or restaurant if the door handle is fabulous, chances are the interior is also going to be fabulous. It provides a hint of things to come. The best door handle I've ever seen is on the front door of a boutique hotel in Shanghai, the Jia (pictured). It's birds sitting on a tree branch. So fabulous! This door handle really is a harbinger of the divine suites behind the door. See more photos below.

Grand Houses - Vaucluse House

Vaucluse_House_-_Exterior_320x200

Vaucluse House in the Sydney suburb of Vaucluse is a Grand House which has a fascinating history. We visited Vaucluse House last time we were in Sydney and were enchanted. It was built by William Charles (W.C.) Wentworth a flamboyant barrister and his wife Sarah Wentworth. He represented the oppressed including convicts. She ran the house, the gardens, the stables etc. Prior to moving into Vaucluse House, they lived together for many years before being married so two of their ten children were born out of wedlock. It was a scandal at the time and resulted in their exclusion from high society. Not that it seemed to worry them with one party thrown on the lawns of Vaucluse House, hosting over 2,000 people! See more photos below.
